The Lantern-Keeper's Debt

The lantern had gone out sometime before dawn, and Sora had not noticed. She noticed now: the wick cold under her thumb, the oil unspent, the whole reservoir still full as a held breath.

Which meant it had not burned down. It had been put out, and put out carefully, by someone who had come up the stairs without waking a single board.

I check the door for the pin I left wedged in the frame.

Gone, of course. The frame held nothing but a bright new scar in the lacquer where the pin had been worried loose, and the corridor beyond was quiet in the particular way corridors are quiet when someone has recently stopped moving in them.

Downstairs the innkeeper was already awake, already pouring, already arranging her face into the expression she kept for guests who had seen something they were not meant to see.

02 WHAT IT REMEMBERS

It remembers the whole story, not just the last few pages.

A second, cheaper model keeps notes while you read: chapters summarised as they close, a list of facts and open goals, the people and places the story has named.

You can see all of it beside the story, and you can edit any of it. Fix a wrong note and the story is right from there on.

03 YOUR KEY, YOUR MACHINE

Your key, your machine, and nothing of ours in between.

Bring your own key from Anthropic, OpenRouter, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Orihai talks to the provider directly. There is no account to make and no server of ours in the middle.

OR NO KEY

Point it at a model running on your own machine instead: Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp, anything that speaks the same protocol. No key, no provider, no bill. The story never leaves the computer it is written on.

YOUR MACHINE

Your stories are a file on your own disk. Back it up by copying it. No sync, no telemetry, no crash reporter.

You pick two models for each story: a good one to write the prose, a cheap one to keep the notes.

04 WHERE A STORY STARTS

Every story starts from a scenario: a world, and the people in it.

Bring one in from a character card you already have, or drop the file anywhere on the page. The format is not ours.

Or have an AI write you one. Orihai gives you a prompt to paste into whatever chat you already use, and you paste the answer back. It sends nothing itself.

The whole app changes, not just an accent colour: paper for daylight, ink for a room with the lamp off, and five in between.

Scenes and places can be illustrated too, through AI Horde or a ComfyUI on your own machine. Off by default, because it spends a generation without being asked.

06 WHAT IT COSTS

Orihai is free to use. You pay your model provider, and nobody else.

There is no subscription and no per-message fee, because there is no Orihai server to run one on. Your provider bills you at their published rate, and a story's running total sits at the foot of its page.

Run the model on your own machine and there is no bill at all. It is the same application either way.
